Rescue services have confirmed that eleven people have died after a helicopter crashed near the city of Bergen.

Rescue workers are continuing their search in the hope of finding possible survivors.

A Norwegian police spokesperson confirmed that the helicopter had been located and that emergency services are ‘doing everything possible to rescue the occupants.’

The helicopter was carrying 13 people from an offshore oil field site in the North Sea.

He went on to say that helicopter is ‘totally smashed.’

“We have not found any survivors. We are still looking.”

“We are searching a large ocean area.”

An eyewitness reported to local media that the ‘helicopters rotor blades came rushing towards us, then we heard a violent explosion.’

Statoil, the energy company that owns the GullfaksĀ B platform that the helicopter was travelling back from, says it has temporarily grounded all helicopters of the type that crashed.
