BOSTON – At about 8:38 PM on Friday, officers responded to a call for a person with a gun in the area of 141 Dorchester Avenue in South Boston.

On arrival, the officers made entry to the building and observed a male suspect armed with a firearm. Upon seeing the officers, the suspect immediately began firing at the officers, causing them to return fire. During the exchange, the suspect was struck by the officers and after a violent struggle, placed in custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries as a result of gunshot wounds.

No police officers were struck by gun fire but several were transported to area hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

A subsequent protective sweep of the location by members of the BPD SWAT Team led to the discovery of two victims suffering from traumatic injuries who were pronounced deceased on scene.

The victims have since been identified as Dr. Richard Field, 49, of Boston and Dr. Lina Bolanos, 38, of Boston—the couple was engaged to be married.

Police believe the suspect knew the victims but declined further comment. Charges are pending.
