ATLANTA — A 6-year-old girl fatally shot herself Saturday and her father has been arrested.
The father fled the scene after the girl accidentally shot herself in the head in the 1000 block of Martin St. SE.
Demargo Smith later spoke with detectives and was charged with reckless conduct. He was taken to the Fulton County Jail.
WSB reports: Authorities said Sunday that Ja’Mecca Smith “accidentally shot herself after finding a loaded handgun between sofa cushions” in the apartment where she was killed.
It was initially reported that the girl was “non-responsive” and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, but Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. Warren Pickard said shortly after noon that the girl’s body remained inside the home.
No further details were available.
