9-Year-Old Shot In The Back at Firework Show

NASHVILEE, Tennessee — Youth Services detectives are investigating a non-critical apparent gunshot injury to a 9-year-old girl who was with her parents downtown to watch the riverfront fireworks show.

Ella Smith, who is visiting with her parents from Mississippi, was at 1st Avenue South and Korean Veterans Boulevard waiting for the riverfront fireworks display to begin when she felt discomfort in her back.

She was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she was diagnosed with an apparent small caliber wound.

The bullet is believed to have come from some distance away and traveled downward, indicating that someone may have randomly fired a weapon into the sky.

Nashville is the capital of the U.S. state of Tennessee. Legendary country music venues include the Grand Ole Opry House, home of the famous “Grand Ole Opry” stage and radio show, in Music Valley. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and historic Ryman Auditorium are Downtown, as is the District, packed with legendary honky-tonks, dive bars and dance halls.
