German Chancellor Angela Merkel has today said that it is ‘unacceptable’ for EU nations to refuse Muslim ‘refugees.’
Germany authorities expect up to 300,000 migrants to arrive this year, compared with over 1.1 million in 2015.
“What I continue to think is wrong is that some say ‘we generally don’t want Muslims in our country, regardless of whether there’s a humanitarian need or not,’” she told German channel ARD.
She then added “everyone must do their part” in the refugee crisis and “a common solution must be found”.
This speech comes after a poll showed that at least 50% of Germans were opposed to a fourth term for Mrs Merkel.
“Those who have been living here for years and perhaps also have German citizenship should take part in the development of our country. If they want to, they are very welcome to do so,” Mrs Merkel said.
She would not confirm if she would stand for a fourth term next year.
On Tuesday, Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka said he does not want a “large Muslim community..given the problems we are seeing”
Slovak President Robert Fico said he would “never bring even a single Muslim into his country”.
