BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Persistence paid off last week for U.S. Border Patrol agents who were involved in the investigation and apprehension of a convicted felon who recently entered the country illegally.

Border Patrol agents discovered evidence that the prior felon, a 27-year-old male Mexican national, had illegally entered the country from Mexico on February 14, 2017. The evidence was personal belongings that the man dropped after crossing the border a short distance east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

This evidence led Border Patrol agents to Bakersfield, Calif., where agents located and apprehended the man last Friday afternoon with the assistance of agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. The man is in federal custody and faces charges for re-entry after deportation.

The man has a felony conviction of assault with a deadly weapon in 2015. He also has three prior deportations from the country, most recently in December 2016.

Richard A. Barlow, Chief Patrol Agent of the San Diego Sector said, “This intelligence-driven effort speaks volumes about Border Patrol agents’ tenacity to pursue any criminal who illegally enters our country.”
