Officer Killed, Another Wounded In Ga. Shooting; Manhunt Underway For Gunman

One Police Officer was killed and another was seriously wounded near Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus Tuesday morning, and a manhunt is underway for the gunman.

“We have two officers that have been shot this morning,” Chief Mark Scott of the Americus Police Department said about 10:45 a.m. today. “One was from the Americus Police Department and one was from the Georgia Southwestern State University Police Department.

“It happened at Country Club Estates apartments about half an hour ago.”

The injuries are reportedly serious.

There is a massive police response to the scene, and a manhunt is underway.

The suspect has been identified by Albany police as Minguell Kennedy Lembrick.

Georgia Southwestern State is currently on lock down and the following was published on the school website:

A shooting has taken place off campus near the south side of the Griffin Bell Golf Course. Students, faculty and staff should remain in their present location until further notice. Please secure all doors and windows (any additional actions such as shut down HVAC, turn off lights, move to unobservable part of the room, get on the floor, away from doors) and await further instructions or contact by first responders.

I repeat, a campus lockdown has been declared. Please relay this information to affected individuals within your work/classroom area immediately and follow instructions of Emergency Operations team members and local authorities.
