OMAHA- Dontevous Loyd, who was wanted in connection with Sunday’s shooting of his pregnant girlfriend and her 2-year-old daughter, turned himself in to police in Omaha on Tuesday morning and was subsequently arrested.
Loyd, aged 23, declared on his Facebook page that he was turning himself in “before I get gunned down.’’ He also made comments alluding that it was not his fault. It is unclear if Loyd has any gang connections.
He was then taken into custody around 5:45 a.m. outside the Douglas County Jail near 17th and Leavenworth Streets.
Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said Tuesday that if an autopsy on Destacia Straughn confirms that she was pregnant, he plans to charge Dontevous Loyd with murder of an unborn child in the first degree. This would bring 3 murder charges against Loyd along with an array of other severe charges.
Police were called to the area of 6630 N. 107th Plaza around 11 PM Sunday night for reports of multiple people shot. When police arrived they found 5 people shot, among them a 2 year old girl. The 2 year old girl, along with her pregnant mother, were pronounced deceased at the scene. Medics took 3 adults to local trauma centers in critical condition.
Police have identified the suspect as Dontevous Loyd, 23 and he is currently being sought by the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force on a warrant charging him with two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, five counts of use of a weapon and one count of possession of a gun by a prohibited person.
Loyd was shot back in 2010 with several other males in a drive by shooting. He had also been in jail burglary and felony theft by receiving stolen property. He was sentenced to 4 years and was released on parole only after 2 years and 6 months.
He is considered armed and dangerous.
Police were reportedly called to the area several times earlier in the day with regards to a stolen vehicle and a disturbance when he returned.
This is the city’s sixth double homicide this year. There has been one triple homicide.
Police have identified the deceased 2 year old as Kenacia Straughn and her 22 year old mother Destacia Straughn, also deceased.
The other victims include a 22 year old female, a 21 year old female, and a 18 year old female all in critical condition.
