ROCKVILLE, Maryland — Detectives from the Montgomery County Police – Major Crimes Division continue to investigate the murders of Richard and Julianne Vilardo, found deceased in their Rockville home on Sunday, May 10.  Late Saturday, May 16, detectives charged Scott Tomaszewski with two counts of first degree murder for the homicides of Richard and Julianne Vilardo.

According to WUSA9, detectives found a “large, messy crime scene indicative of a violent struggle, which made it difficult to tell what might be missing.”

As detectives continued to investigate this double homicide they learned that in 1998 there had been a previous burglary of the Vilarado home while they were away for a period of time.  Police also determined that Scott Tomaszewski, a next-door-neighbor had been given access to the home by the Vilardo family as a care-taker while they were gone.  Crime analysis of neighborhood activity revealed that between April 4 and April 6 of this year, there had been a burglary of another home on Ridge Drive.  Subsequently detectives established that Scott Tomaszewski had pawned items on April 20 that had been taken in the April 2015 burglary.

On Saturday, May 16 at approximately 12:30 p.m., investigators executed a search warrant at the Tomaszewski residence, for evidence of the 2015 burglary.  At approximately the same time in Juneau, Alaska, three Montgomery County detectives, with the assistance of the Juneau Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.), and the United States Coast Guard, executed a search warrant on the cabin of the ship where Tomaszewski was a passenger.

Evidence linking Tomaszewski to the burglary and the murders was located in his cabin and at the Tomaszewski home in Rockville.  This evidence includes U.S. currency with possible blood on it that is believed to have been taken from the Vilardo home.  Tomaszewski was taken into custody by Juneau authorities.  While being questioned, Tomaszewski confessed to killing Richard and Julianne Vilardo.

Scott Michael Tomaszewski has been charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of armed robbery, and one count of first degree burglary.  Once the extradition process is complete, Scott Tomaszewski will be transported to Montgomery County for arraignment.
