HOBOKEN, NJ — A train crashed into the train station in Hoboken Thursday morning with reports of several injuries.

At least three people have died and up to 100 people have sustained injuries, according to authorities.

Images on social media showed extensive damage to the train station, with twisted metal and piles of debris.

The incident occurred shortly before 9 am local time.

A police officer told NBC New York that there were “mass casualties”.

Fire officials said they were investigating the crash as a possible derailment.

“My train just derailed and crashed into the Hoboken train station,” one passenger wrote. “Thankfully all I got was a crack to my head, please pray for the rest.”

Photos on social media showed extensive damage to the station.

Rail service was suspended in and out of Hoboken, which is directly across the Hudson River from New York City.

“It simply did not stop,” WFAN anchor John Minko, who witnessed the crash, told 1010 WINS. “It went right through the barriers and into the reception area.”

New Jersey EMS has confirmed that there are around 100 people who have sustained injuries.
