At Least 1 Dead And Multiple Injured After Large Crane Collapses In NYC

At least fifteen people have been hurt and one has died after a large crane collapsed in lower Manhattan on Friday morning.

Fire officials have said that two people have sustained injuries and are being evaluated at the scene.

It is not known if there are any more injuries.

David Wichs, aged 38, was killed while he was sitting in his parked car when the crane crashed more than 200 feet to the ground.

The crane, located at 57 Worth Street in Tirebaca, was being secured and lowered when it suddenly plummeted.

FDNY deployed over 140 firefighters and EMS from over 40 units to the surrounding area.

New York City has instructed all 376 crawler cranes and 53 tower cranes to be secured immediately.

Con Ed Electric and Gas are on the scene after receiving multiple reports of a gas leak.

The crane was parked on Worth Street, and the incident occurred as the crane was being lowered in order to secure it during the snowy and windy conditions.

Mayor Bill deBlasio said it was a sad situation, but added: ‘Thank God it was not any worse. It’s something of a miracle that there wasn’t more impact.’

Images have emerged on social media that show the crane crashed on a small lower Manhattan street, smashing several parked cars.

Over 100 firefighters have responded to the incident, along with police and other agencies.

The are no reports of any liquid fuel leaks as a result of the collapse.

The exact reason of the collapse is not known, it is suspected that weather conditions played may of had an affect.
