WATCH: (Scroll Down For Video) The shooter opened fire at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, which has killed at least three people and injured five officers and four civilians on Friday.
CBS News has reported that the gunman is named Robert Lewis Dear, aged 59.
Three people were killed including one police officer and two civilians Colorado Springs – mayor John Suthers said Friday evening: ‘We mourn the loss of two civilian victims, we mourn the loss of a very brave police officer.’
The officer was identified as 44-year-old Garrett Swasey, a six-year veteran of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs police force and a married father-of-two.
Authorities were called to 3480 Centennial Boulevard after getting 911 calls about shots fired shortly before noon on Friday.
They spent at least five hours inside the building, exchanging fire with the gunman and evacuating civilians before capturing him alive.
Some of the civilians hit by gunfire had escaped the clinic and were running way when they were hit by the shooter.
Mayor Suthers said: ‘The perpetrator is in custody. The situation has been resolved. There’s no continuing peril to the citizens of Colorado Springs.
‘But there’s a huge crime scene that has to be processed. We have to determine exactly how many victims there are. We’ll be reporting on that in the near future.’
Officials also confirmed that at least five officers were shot. One of the officers was reportedly hit in the hand. The extent of the injuries sustained by the others is unknown at this time.
The officer who was shot dead traveled to the scene in response to a report that an officer was under fire and in need of support.
He and his wife Rachel have a young son and daughter, Elijah and Faith.
