A mosque in Brussels has been evacuated after a white powder was found, which sparked anthrax fears.

Fire crews and decontamination teams have been sent to the building, which is close to the European Union headquarters.

The fire service said it was called after a person from the mosque called to say they believed they had found anthrax powder.

Around a dozen emergency vehicles were reportedly seen outside the Islamic and Cultural Centre of Belgium, a large Saudi-established institution including a mosque situated 200 metres from the European Commission.

It is currently not known what the substance is.

Belgian media have reported that envelopes of white powder were found.

Brussels remains on the highest terror alert level, with much of the city shut down for the past few days.

NOTE: This is a developing story, further details will be added as they become available.
