AUSTRALIA — The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a deadly hostage situation at an apartment block in Brighton.

The suspect was shot dead by police in the Bay Street apartment complex shortly before 6pm.

Police rescued a woman who was being held against her will in the apartment complex.

Three police members sustained non-life threatening injuries during the arrest – two have been taken to hospital and one was treated on scene.

Another man was earlier located deceased with a gunshot wound in the lobby of the serviced apartment building just after 4pm.

ISIS has claimed the man responsible for the fatal siege is ‘one of its soldiers.’

The deceased gunman reportedly called a television station during the incident to pledge allegiance to ISIS, Al Qaeda.

“The attack in Melbourne, Australia was carried out by a soldier of the Islamic State in response to the call for targeting the subjects of the coalition states,” the group’s Amaq news agency said in a statement.

The investigation is ongoing.
