French police say an officer is dead and two others were seriously wounded following a shooting in central Paris Thursday.
Officials say a police officer was sitting in a car at a stop light when a shooter opened fire. Witnesses said the suspect was armed ‘with a Kalashnikov,’ or an AK-47.
One gunman was reportedly killed near the Champs Elysees. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack and has identified one of its “soldiers” who did it as Belgian Abu Yusuf al-Beljiki, Sky News reported.
The deceased suspect was known to intelligence services and the incident is being labeled as a terror attack by the French President.
Paris authorities warn people to avoid the Champs Elysees as the investigation continues.
