Police Officer Shot In NM Shot & Killed

RIO RANCHO, New Mexico — Scroll Down For Video — Police in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, are searching for a man who shot and killed an on-duty officer Monday night.

The Officer, with the Rio Rancho police department, was shot in front of the Esther Bone Memorial Library, according to local reports.

The officer has died from his injuries. The suspect is believed to be at large.

The shooting happened a few feet from the Veterans Memorial. The officer who died was an Air Force veteran himself. He was 49 years old and leaves behind 5 children. 

Chief Michael Geier said the man fled the scene in a Dodge pickup. Authorities are questioning a person in connection with incident.

RRPD says this is the first time one of their officers has been shot since the department was founded in 1981.

A witness at the scene told KOB he heard four shots fired.

This is a breaking story. No further details were available.

Rio Rancho is the largest city and economic hub of Sandoval County in the U.S. state of New Mexico. A small portion of the city extends into northern Bernalillo County.
