NEW ORLEANS — A New Orleans Police Officer has reportedly died after being shot in the head Saturday morning.

An arrested subject who was being transported by the officer somehow got a hold of a gun in the car and shot the officer.

The officer was reportedly taken to the hospital, where he died. He has been identified as Officer Daryle Holloway, a 22-year veteran of the force.

The incident happened shortly before 9 a.m. The squad car crashed into a telephone pole after the incident.

A massive manhunt is ongoing for the suspect, 33 year-old Travis Boys.

The search for Boys involves officers from NOPD, State Police, the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office and HANO.

Police describe Boys as a black male, approximately 5’11” with a tattoo on the left side of his neck.

From The New Orleans Advocate: — “Uptown-bound lanes of North Claiborne Avenue remained closed and the intersection was marked off with yellow incident tape while traffic was diverted to back streets on Saturday morning.

While official NOPD accounts only described the shut-down as due to an “officer-involved incident,” neighbors said that a squad car seemed to have had hit a transformer, perhaps because of an officer experiencing a medical event.

Neighbors said that they saw other officers trying to resuscitate an officer, who was then put in an ambulance and taken away from the scene.” —

A SWAT truck is at the scene of the crash, where it appears a manhunt may be being initiated.

No further details were available.
