The Panthers organization said Wednesday that Newton was thankful for the care he received and is stiff and sore, but otherwise “his spirits were high.” Newton left the hospital with his family and will stay with them while recuperating.

Newton suffered two transverse process fractures in his lower back and no further internal injuries. The fourth-year passer is in fair condition and undergoing tests at Carolinas Medical Center. Newton will remain there overnight.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department spokesperson Rob Tufano, the accident occurred on S. Church St. at 12:30 p.m. ET.

“Both Newton, who was the driver of the truck, and the driver of the sedan were taken to (a) hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” Tufano said. “Police are continuing to investigate.”

One eyewitness saw Newton’s vehicle flip “two or three times,” Jonathan Jones of The Charlotte Observer told NFL Network.

The accident occurred in front of Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The American football quarterback was driven away in an ambulance for urgent care. Extent of injuries from accident unknown. He was seen talking to emergency responders and was fully conscious. Eye witness accounts say that the Quarterback was having difficulty standing up after the accident.

The Carolina Panthers tweeted that the team is closely monitoring the crash and will have more information later on Newton.

Newton has 2,800 yards passing this season with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also has rushed for 425 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a 4-8-1 record.

Newton, an Atlanta native, led the Auburn Tigers to a national championship.
