Beale Air Force Base Issues Statement After U2 Spy Plane Crash

The Air Force confirmed a plane crash in Sutter County, California on Tuesday.

According to Action News Now, the aircraft that went down ‘in the Sutter Butte Mountains was the training version of a U2 spy plane.’

Two pilots reportedly ejected before the crash–one died and one survived, NBC Bay Area reported.

A large fire was reported at the scene of the wreckage.

Beale Air Force Base released the following statement: “A Unites States Air Force U-2 Dragon Lady crashed shortly after takeoff at approximately 9:05 a.m. today near the Sutter Buttes mountain range. The aircraft was assigned to the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron at Beale Air Force Base and was on a training mission. Two pilots were on-board and ejected from the aircraft. The incident is currently under investigation. Additional details will be provided as they become available.”
