TEXAS – Amid the investigation into the botched police response to the massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, the district’s top cop has been placed on leave.

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo is placed on leave effective immediately, the district said.

“From the beginning of this horrible event, I shared that the district would wait until the investigation was complete before making personnel decisions,” Dr. Hal Harrell, Superintendent, said in a statement. “Today, I am still without details of the investigations being conducted by various agencies. Because of the lack of clarity that remains and the unknown timing of when I will receive the results of the investigations, I have made the decision to place Chief Arredondo on administrative leave effective on this date.”

“Lieutenant Mike Hernandez will assume the duties of the UCISD Chief of Police,” Harrell added. “We will continue to seek qualified candidates to join our police department as we prepare for the new school year. There will be no further information released regarding this personnel matter.”
