When Tustin, Calif. police officers entered 40-year-old Joshua West’s hotel room in March, they found alleged illegal drugs, used needles and Bubba.
According to a statement from the police department earlier this month, Bubba is a terrier mix puppy that “was found to have heroin, methamphetamine and nicotine in his system due to living with his drug using owners.”
Animal control officers who were called to the scene saw that Bubba appeared lethargic.
“This strikes me as pretty horrible,” Tustin Police Lt. Robert Wright told CBS Los Angeles last week. “This is the first time we’ve ever heard of someone reporting that an animal has been under the influence.”
Bubba was sent to Orange County Animal Care, where he is being treated for his condition. West was arrested for an outstanding warrant; a parole violation; and possession of drug paraphernalia, heroin and methamphetamine, according to CBS Los Angeles.
The puppy now appears to be on the mend, authorities told the Los Angeles Times. Bubba will be given to a rescue organization who “can find him a forever home” once he is fully recovered, police said on Facebook.
