A Colorado State Patrol cadet was killed and CSP trooper was critically injured when they were hit on Colorado Highway 66 near Longmont Saturday morning.

The cadet was declared dead on scene. The trooper was taken with critical injuries to a local area hospital.

Troopers attempted to stop a 2002 Honda Civic driven by a 27-year-old male, the State Patrol said.  The suspect hit speeds of 100 mph during the chase, according to police.

“The vehicle failed to yield and went into the scene of an ongoing crash investigation by other State Patrol troopers,” a State Patrol release said. “During attempts to use stop sticks, the suspect vehicle struck both the trooper and cadet, both of whom were outside the vehicle.”

Christopher Gebers, 27, faces vehicular homicide and first-degree murder charges in the Saturday crash, which left CSP Cadet Taylor Thyfault, 21, dead and Trooper Clinton Rushing, 37, critically injured.
