China lodged a diplomatic protest early Saturday after President-elect Trump spoke by phone with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan.

The phone call with Tsai Ing-wen is the first between a US president/president-elect and a president of Taiwan since diplomatic relations were cut in 1979.

“It must be pointed out that there is only one China in the world,” the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday, adding that it had lodged “solemn representations with the US”.

“The one China principle is the political basis of the China-U.S. relationship,” it said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said; “This is just the Taiwan side engaging in a petty action, and cannot change the ‘one China’ structure already formed by the international community.”

“I believe that it won’t change the longstanding ‘one China’ policy of the United States government.”

Trump said on Twitter that Tsai had initiated the call he had with the Taiwan president. “The President of Taiwan CALLED ME today to wish me congratulations on winning the Presidency. Thank you!” he said.
