The copilot was able to land the plane safely.

Captain Michael Johnston, 57, was piloting the plane when he fell ill and died.

Johnston’s wife, BJ, told CNN affiliate KUTV-TV that her husband had a double bypass surgery in 2006. She said she was told he likely died of a heart attack.

The flight was scheduled to land in Boston Monday morning at 8 a.m. after departing Phoenix at midnight.
