HAWAII — 31-year-old Jamie Zimmerman, a Doctor that worked at ABC News, died following a tragic accident while she was on vacation in Hawaii.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Monday, witnesses called 911 after they saw a woman, identified as Jamie Zimmerman, being swept out to sea from the mouth of Lumahai River, the Star advertiser reported.

Lifeguards on jet-skis responded within minutes.

“Investigators believe she was attempting to cross the river when she apparently lost her footing and was swept out,” police said.

The woman was unresponsive when lifeguards reached her in waters approximately 200 yards from the river mouth.

They immediately brought her to shore and administered CPR.

A man in a pick-up truck helped lifeguards move Zimmerman to a parking lot where she was the transported to the hospital.

She was pronounced dead a short time later.

Jordan Zimmerman, Jamie’s mother wrote the following message on Facebook: “This is a post I never thought I would have to write. It is not supposed to happen this way!

On Monday my precious daughter Jamie Lauren slipped on some rocks at the mouth of the Lumahai River on Kauai, Hawaii and was swept out to sea. Lifeguards and paramedics rushed to rescue Jamie, but were not able to resuscitate her.

Those of you who knew Jamie or perhaps read some of her writings knew that she loved people above all else. It was her passion to be of service and teaching meditation was her calling.

In her short 31 years Jamie traveled the globe representing America as a caring mindfulness ambassador. Her accomplishments included helping Congolese refugees in Zambia, volunteering in a cash-strapped hospital in India, building classrooms in Uganda, and working with indigenous people on the Amazon in Peru. Jamie served as a United Nations Global Health representative in Haiti and she even taught meditation at the U.S. Capitol.”

Zimmerman researched stories for ABC’s medical unit and also offered meditation sessions for ABC News staff in New York, the AP reported.
