Elderly Man Accused of Murdering 81-Year-Old Wife

JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee – ((TBI) — A joint investigation between the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in a murder charge for an Erwin man accused of killing his 81-year-old wife.

On Sunday, at the request of 1st District Attorney General Tony Clark, TBI Special Agents joined the investigation into the incident.

Earlier in the day, Norman McKinney flagged down a Unicoi County deputy near his home on Masters Street in Erwin and indicated he shot his wife.

McKinney then led deputies to the couple’s residence, where they found May McKinney suffering from a gunshot wound. She later succumbed to her injuries at Johnson City Medical Center.

Though originally taken into custody on Sunday, authorities served McKinney today with a warrant charging the 76-year-old with one count of First Degree Murder.

At the time of this release, he was being held in the custody of the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department on $300,000 bond. The incident remains under investigation by both agencies. -Josh DeVine, TBI
