Lordsburg, NM. – The children of two elementary schools in Southern New Mexico were selected to help name two Border Patrol horses that are now a part of the Horse Patrol Unit in Lordsburg.

The horses were acquired as part of an ongoing program between the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Border Patrol. The horses are wild when they first enter the program, then are trained and sold to the Border Patrol where they become working horses. The program allows horses that might otherwise be euthanized, then go through the training and ultimately become a valuable part of the team in helping secure our nation’s borders.

Elementary Schools located in Lordsburg and Animas, New Mexico were selected to come up with names for both horses. The names were suggested by children at both schools, and he list was narrowed down to two names. R.V. Traylor Elementary in Lordsburg submitted the name, “Maverick”, while Animas Elementary School chose “Diesel”.

The Lordsburg Border Patrol Station displayed its appreciation to the schools by providing themwith posters of each horse, along with educational coloring books for each child.
