NYPD Transit Canine ‘Danz’, a member of the Department’s elite crime fighting team committed to keeping subway riders safe passed away March 1. The seven-year veteran of the NYPD was named for Police Officer Vincent Danz of Emergency Service Truck 3, who was killed during the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Danz was one of 12 dogs originally trained by the Transit Bureau, which had discontinued the canine unit in 1997 and began the program again in 2005. The German shepherd was the first  multipurpose canine with abilities to track a missing person, help apprehend suspects and alert officers to explosives.
Danz was also certified with the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) in Patrol and Explosive Detection.  The dog  received many national awards through the USPCA, including placing first overall multiple times, “Top Dog”.  In 2013, Canine Danz finished third place overall out of 90 dogs throughout the county at the National Police Dog Certification in Maryland.

    Transit Canine Unit History:
The first four canine teams were patrolling New York City’s subway system in October 2006. By 2008 the unit grew to 28 canines partnered with officers. Shortly thereafter, the unit acquired three additional dogs that were trained to detect explosives. The unit is currently transitioning to multipurpose canines that have the ability to apprehend suspects, evidence recovery, tracking missing persons, building and area searches, as well as explosive detection.
