Russian President Vladimir Putin received a message from his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, expressing deep regret over the incident, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

“The head of the Turkish state expressed his sympathy and deep condolences to the family of the Russian pilot who was killed, and he said sorry,” Peskov said on a conference call on Monday.

Erdogan said he would do everything he could to restore the “traditionally friendly ties between Turkey and Russia.”

Turkey shot down a Russian warplane near its border with Syria in November. Russia had said the plane was in Syria, while Turkey said it crossed the border.
