NASHVILLE — A former Maplewood High School teacher is in custody in Fresno, California, on a Nashville grand jury indictment charging her with sexual battery by an authority figure.

Officers in the MNPD’s Warrants Division determined that Janai Mercedes Smothers, 25, was likely in Fresno and requested that authorities there attempt to locate her. Smothers was arrested by Fresno police at a local school Monday afternoon.

The indictment alleges that Smothers had unlawful physical contact at Maplewood with a teenage female student during the 2015-16 school year. The MNPD’s Sex Crimes Unit conducted the investigation that led to the indictment.

Smothers’ return to Nashville is pending California court proceedings.
