ALABAMA — Hoover Police Traffic investigators have formally charged a Pleasant Grove woman in connection with a hit-and-run pedestrian accident that occurred on November 13th. The 55 year old male victim was working for a tree removal company when he was struck by a delivery van.

He was helping slow traffic while his co-worker backed a large tree truck into the roadway near the intersection of South Shades Crest Road and Russet Woods Drive just after 12:00 p.m.

The suspect slowed briefly after striking the victim, and then sped away. Witnesses followed the vehicle and attempted to get the driver to stop.

She made evasive maneuvers while fleeing the scene, which included driving through a yard to get away. Witnesses also observed that the driver was wearing a FedEx uniform shirt. Investigators then located the suspect vehicle at the FedEx facility on Snow Drive in Homewood.

FedEx management fully cooperated with detectives, which included providing the name of the driver.

This investigation was recently completed and a felony warrant was obtained yesterday at the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office in Bessemer. The suspect is charged as follows:

Tiarta Jhane Smith21 years old Pleasant Grove, AL – Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injuries (felony) $10,000.00 Bond

Smith surrendered on Tuesday at the Hoover City Jail and was transferred last night to the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer.

The victim in this case suffered serious injuries, including several broken bones, and spent a week at UAB Hospital. He is now recovering at home. -HPD
