Has the government charged your city, state or college with fraud? Find out here.
The state of Hawaii, the city of Memphis and Montgomery College in Maryland are among dozens of states, cities, schools and other entities charged with misleading investors, U.S. regulators announced Wednesday.
The charges are related to the issuing of municipal bonds by 71 entities between 2011 and 2014. According to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the issuers in question sold bonds using misleading documents that contained false statements and omissions.
The parties involved settled with regulators without admitting or denying the findings, according to the SEC. They also agreed to update their policies and procedures, and cooperate with any subsequent investigations.
The violations were self-reported by bond issuers and underwriters in exchange for favorable settlement terms, the SEC said.
