Two FBI agents were shot and injured while serving a warrant Tuesday morning outside Chicago, and the suspected shooter was later found dead inside the home, according to authorities.
The agents suffered wounds that were not considered life-threatening, FBI spokesman Garrett Croon said. They were serving an arrest warrant in Park Forest, Illinois, a town about 35 miles south of downtown Chicago.
Croon said no additional information was available regarding the incident and did not elaborate on what had prompted the arrest warrant. The suspected shooter who was found dead was not immediately identified.
A school system in the area urged parents to keep children at home Tuesday morning because of what it called “an unsafe situation in the community.”
In a message posted online later in the morning, the Park Forest-Chicago Heights School District 163 said they had been told by police that the situation “has been resolved.” School remains in session, and students who walked or took the bus were allowed to continue to the facilities, the school district said in its message to parents.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may have presented to parents, however the students safety is our first concern,” the message said.
This is the second time this month that an FBI agent in Illinois was shot and injured. A police officer in Mahomet, Illinois, was shot by a driver during a traffic stop on May 7, officials said, and the driver ultimately fled to the southern part of the state, sparking a manhunt.
The driver – identified by police as Dracy “Clint” Pendleton – was located by authorities on May 15. After a firefight at an abandoned house, Pendleton’s body was found and he was pronounced dead, the Illinois State Police said. An FBI SWAT operator was wounded during that shootout, the state police said.
