Relatives reported gunshot wound was self-inflicted

FLORIDA — The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting incident that took the life of a 14-year-old boy Saturday night in Oak Hill.

Deputies responded to 287 Wood Avenue in Oak Hill around 7:30 p.m. Saturday on a report of a juvenile with a gunshot wound to the neck. The victim, Ernesto Sierra-Plummer of Oak Hill, was transported to Florida Hospital New Smyrna, where he succumbed to his wound at 8:44 p.m.

Relatives of Sierra-Plummer were in the residence at the time of the shooting but said they did not witness the incident occur. Two of his cousins reported hearing a gunshot and finding Sierra-Plummer shot in the neck. One cousin reported Sierra-Plummer had a handgun in his hand, and the other reported that the 14-year-old said he’d shot himself.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.
