In one of the stranger confessions we’ve heard in a long time, former first daughter and “Today” show co-host Jenna Bush Hager revealed that her grandmother, former first lady Barbara Bush, is missing a toe on each foot.

The bizarre on-air revelation, which Bush Hager quickly realized was TMI (“Ganny, I’m sorry I shouldn’t have said it!” she said) begs so many questions: Why do we care? Is it weird to be thinking about Barbara Bush’s toes?

And most importantly, how did she lose them?

Bush Hager told a baffled co-host Kathy Lee Gifford that the loss of the digits had something to do with getting older. “It happened with age,” she said of her 91-year-old grandmom.

We checked in with James Christina, the head of the American Podiatric Medical Association, who reassured us that toe loss is not typical (whew). “That is not a normal complication related to old age,” he said. “There would have to be some related disease state.”

Complications from diabetes or poor circulation could be at play, Christina noted. But losing a piggie isn’t such a big deal, he says – as long as it’s not the big toe, “It wouldn’t affect your function at all,” he says.
