COLUMBIA, S.C. – Widespread flooding continued across South Carolina throughout the day and forecasters expect severe weather conditions for the next several days.

At least five people are dead and dozens more are awaiting rescue as the waters continue to rise.

Curfews have been ordered.

President Obama has declared a federal emergency in South Carolina, which activates federal resources to support the state and local efforts to protect the public during the storm and recovery.

Statement from Governor Nikki Haley: “This flood disaster has been like nothing South Carolina has ever seen. Estimates indicate that this type of flooding occurs only once in a thousand years.

Our prayers are with those who have lost their homes and businesses and those who are still in danger as waters continue to rise. We cannot encourage you enough to stay home and stay off the roads so that our first responders and utility and maintenance crews can get their jobs done.

Team South Carolina continues to be all hands on deck as we work through this. The heroes in this situation continue to be our first responders, DOT maintenance crews, and our utility workers. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue to work in these dangerous conditions.”
