Player Joao Contreras was standing on the field with other athletes as two teams faced off in Peru last weekend.
It took a while before others on the field knew what had happened, but fellow players assumed he was dead. The ordeal caused the rest of the game to be postponed.
Miraculously, Contreras is stable, according to Washington Post, but suffered second-degree burns from the strike.
A segment on Good Morning America Friday reported that Contreras feels ‘born again’ during his recovery.
Four others were reportedly hurt as well.
