Indianapolis police fatally shoot driver following pursuit

INDIANAPOLIS – (News Release / IMPD) —  Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is investigating after an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) on the city’s northwest side.

Just before 2:00 a.m., on 6.29.2017 IMPD officers initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of E. Riverside Drive/ Burdsal Parkway. As officers approached the vehicle the driver sped off. The driver led officers on a short vehicle pursuit which ended in the intersection of 23rd St. / Aqueduct St. after the vehicle crashed. Two three year veteran officers approached the vehicle to make apprehension.

The officers engaged the suspect, later firing their service weapon striking the suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Aaron Bailey. Officers immediately called for the assistance of EMS personnel when they arrived they immediately began rendering aid and transported the male to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Despite the best life-saving efforts by medical staff, Bailey was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Inside the vehicle was a passenger located in the front seat, later identified as 26-year-old Shiwanda Ward, who was arrested preliminarily charged with possession of paraphernalia, and was transported to the Arrestee Processing Center for booking. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a charging decision.
