Iran has awarded five navy commanders with medals after they detained ten US sailors last month.

The sailors were released a day later after they were held on Farsi Island after Iran alleged they were trespassing.

The medal was awarded to four commanders, the medal is usually awarded to military commanders, politicians and war heroes.

Admiral Ali Fadavi initially accused the US sailors of spying, after an investigation he concluded they were led astray by a broken navigation system.

Earlier last month John Kerry said: ‘That this issue was resolved peacefully and efficiently is a testament to the critical role diplomacy plays in keeping our country safe, secure, and strong.’

Last year, Iranian patrol boats seized the Maersk Tigris, a cargo ship sailing under the Marshall Islands flag, which meant it was under US protection.

And in March 2007, Iranian patrols captured 15 British Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel, interrogated them and held them for 13 days before releasing them, according to the DailyMail.
