DAMASCUS – After establishing a massive militant caliphate in 2014, so-called Islamic State has been defeated, Fox News reported on Thursday, saying that the last village under the group’s control has been liberated.

It has not been widely reported by other news agencies, however, Fox News journalists have been travelling with the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces for the last five days as the last major offensive took place.

A formal announcement is expected shortly, the report says. The final village is Baghouz.

The report comes after U.S. President Donald Trump triumphantly declared the “100 per cent” defeat of ISIS’s caliphate as he promoted the withdrawal of all U.S. forces, a move that has since been reportedly backtracked.

His national security advisor, John Bolton, admitted on TV that “the ISIS threat will remain” and that this explained why a small “observer force” would now stay in Syria.
