German police are now investigating an Islamist link to the bomb attack that specifically targeted the Borussia Dortmund team bus on Tuesday night, whilst also looking into a post claiming responsibility from a self proclaimed anti-fascist group.

Defender Marc Bartra was injured in the attack, which left him needing surgery on a broken bone in his wrist.

According to the German newspaper Sueddeutsche, a letter found at the site opens with; “In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.”

It also claimed that German warplanes are involved in murdering Muslims in the self-declared caliphate of the Islamic State group.

It also said sports stars and other prominent people “in Germany and other crusader nations” are on a “death list of the Islamic State”.

Dortmund Chief Executive Hans-Joachim Watzke told the media: “We won’t give in to terror.”

“We do not just play for us today. We play for everyone,” Watzke said. “We want to show that terror and hatred can never determine our actions. And of course we play for Marc Bartra, who wants to see his team win!”
