2 Dead, 1 Injured In Murder-Suicide on Michigan Interstate

BOSTON TOWNSHIP, Michigan — On January 6th, 2018, at 9:39 p.m. an Ionia County Sheriff’s Deputy was dispatched to the report of a motorist assist on I-96 near Nash Hwy in Boston Township. Upon arrival to the scene at 10:01pm, the Deputy discovered a silver Chevrolet Equinox parked on the roadway with the liftgate and passenger side doors opened, two deceased victims off the roadway on the shoulder side, and a third victim inside the vehicle injured by an apparent gunshot wound.

The Deputy was able to render aid to the victim in the vehicle until other officers and first responders arrived on scene. Two subjects were pronounced dead at the scene; the third subject was transported to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital.

Further investigation at the scene determined that this was a case of an apparent murder/suicide. The decedents are identified as 51 year old David Somers of Kaleva, MI and 51 year old Lisa Somers of Kaleva, MI. Both died of gunshot wounds at the scene. A loaded shotgun was found at the scene directly underneath David Somers body.

The living victim found in the car by police is identified as Amber Dewey, 18 of Kaleva, MI whom is the daughter of Lisa Somers. Dewey was treated at the scene by Life EMS and the Saranac Fire Department, before being transported by ambulance to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. Dewey remains in critical, but stable condition at this time.

The Michigan State Police Lakeview Post assisted at the scene, and also helped close a portion of eastbound I-96 near mile marker 59 as Sheriff’s Detectives investigated this shooting and collected evidence. The highway reopened at 1:40am.

There is no clear motive at this time of what prompted this homicide.
