LAS VEGAS — (Scroll down for video) — LVMPD Assistant Sheriff Kirk Primas met with the media today to discuss additional details of the November 24, 2015 officer involved shooting. At approximately 1:59 a.m. an LVMPD patrol officer in a marked police vehicle conducted a records check on the license plate of a Mitsubishi Mirage.
The DMV record came back to a Chevrolet and the officer initiated a vehicle stop in the 1700 block of Karen Avenue. The vehicle did not stop and the officer did not pursue. Officers in marked police vehicles arrived in the area and one of those officers saw the Mitsubishi without lights on moving slowly Eastbound on Katie Avenue. The vehicle was rolling and did not appear to be occupied.
That officer positioned his patrol vehicle in front of the Mitsubishi and successfully blocked it from entering the busy intersection of Katie Avenue and South Maryland Parkway.
Other arriving officers were advised by a citizen the driver of the Mitsubishi was seen going into the Katie Avenue entrance to the French Oaks Apartments. As an officer entered the complex he observed a security guard escorting a male subject off of the property. That subject was later identified as 32-year old Thomas McEniry.
The officer attempted to talk with McEniry, but he did not comply with the officer’s verbal commands and he ran into a small enclosure within the parking lot of the complex. The officer followed McEniry to the enclosure. McEniry ignored repeated commands to show his hands which were positioned behind his back.
As other patrol officers arrived at the enclosure, one officer deployed an Electronic Control Device (Taser) and McEniry fell to the ground. The Taser was ineffective and allowed McEniry to lunge toward a firearm that had fallen from his person onto the ground near him.
Three officers fired their duty weapons at McEniry and he was struck several times. Medical assistance was immediately summoned, and he was transported to the Sunrise Trauma Center where he was later pronounced deceased.
The investigation is ongoing.
