TEXAS — On November 28, 2015, around 4:00 p.m., Dallas Police Officer James Covey, #9354, was arrested for suspicion of Driving While Intoxicated M/B. Officer Covey was on duty at the time of his arrest.

Officer Covey has been on the department since January 2008, and is currently assigned to third watch at the Southeast Patrol Division.

Dallas Morning News Reports: ” […] two officers found him after he got into a car accident by himself in high water at 4500 Elsie Faye Heggins St., in South Dallas. He staggered out of the car and seemed disoriented when the officers asked how he was, the warrant stated, and he didn’t say how he got in the accident.

The document stated Covey was transported to the Baylor University Medical Center but said he didn’t want to leave before retrieving his belongings from his car. As an officer went in to retrieve them for him, she found an empty plastic cup in the car’s center console that smelled of alcohol, according to the warrant. Officers then performed an eye test on Covey at the hospital and found signs that he had consumed alcohol, according to the document.

Covey at first denied that he had drunk alcohol or knew what was in the plastic cup, the warrant stated, but eventually he admitted that the cup had some Kentucky Deluxe whiskey in it and that he had drunk some that morning.”

He has been placed on Administrative Leave pending an Internal Affairs Division investigation.
