TENNESSEEĀ — A Hendersonville man faces multiple charges after he fled from police this afternoon following an alleged illegal drug transaction in a hotel parking lot at 1504 Hampton Street.

North Precinct undercover detectives observed Donald Newcomb, 44, purchase marijuana from John Davis III, 27. The two men were in separate vehicles.

As Detective Raymond Flaherty approached the men, Newcomb quickly reversed his Nissan Altima, then put the car in drive, and struck Flaherty. Flaherty was not seriously injured.

Newcomb then fled at a high rate of speed westbound on Trinity Lane before turning onto Whites Creek Pike.

Minutes later, he struck a car at the corner of Avalon Drive at Grover Street. That vehicle collided with an unmarked police car driven by Detective Harrison Nearn who suffered a broken arm. No one was seriously injured in the other vehicle. Newcomb continued to flee on Whites Creek Pike before finally stopping on Francis Street where he was taken into custody.

Newcomb, who is being held on $300,000 bond, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a police officer, resisting arrest, evading arrest, failure to render aid, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Davis, of Dolan Road, was taken into custody in the hotel parking lot. During a probable cause search of his Chevrolet Malibu, officers recovered more than ten ounces of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and $947 cash.

Davis is charged with felony marijuana possession and is being held in lieu of $30,000 bond.
