CALIFORNIA — Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a Deputy-Involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning.
Detectives learned that, just after 4:00 AM, deputies conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Ferris Avenue and Whittier Boulevard, East Los Angeles, to investigate a possible stolen vehicle. As the deputies encountered the right-front passenger of the vehicle, the male suspect became combative with the deputies, and a struggle ensued.
During the struggle, the deputies became aware the suspect was armed and was attempting to retrieve his weapon. Deputies gave several commands for the suspect to comply with their orders, however the suspect continued to struggle and refused to stop his motion for his weapon. This resulted in a deputy-involved shooting.
The suspect, a 29-year-old male-Hispanic, was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputies were not injured during the incident.
A 22-caliber revolver was recovered at the scene and two additional occupants of the vehicle were detained.
The investigation is still active and on-going and there is no further information at this time.
Whenever a Deputy Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and it results in the fatality of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.
