LONDON — Mijanul Haque, 23, from north London was sentenced to a total of three years’ imprisonment, having been found guilty on Wednesday, 13 December at Kingston Crown Court of encouragement of terrorism and dissemination of terrorist material, with the intention of encouraging or inducing the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Haque also pleaded guilty to dissemination of terrorist material as being reckless to encouraging or inducing the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

Haque was stopped at Heathrow airport on 14 August, 2016 as he returned to the UK on a flight from Ghana. Officers seized his phone and found various images and material related to Daesh, including images of Deash leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi.

Officers also seized Haque’s laptop on which a copy of Haque’s mobile phone hard drive had been saved. Within the copy were Whatsapp messages in which Haque had shared Daesh propaganda videos with his contacts. He had also sent them comments with links to online material encouraging acts of terrorism.

While on bail, officers attended Haque’s address, where they found three further devices. When they were examined, officers found a number of other pro-Daesh documents and speeches on his devices.

After further enquiries, Haque was charged on Sunday, 9 June with the above offences and sentenced as above.

Commander Dean Haydon, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command said: “We’ve seen from the devastating attacks suffered here in the UK and abroad the terrible impact of this toxic ideology. It was clear from the array of material we found on Haque’s devices that he was sharing their material to promote Daesh and encourage others to commit terrorist acts.

“I would urge the public where they see this sort of material being shared or come across it on the Internet to report it to us, so that we can take appropriate action.”
