A man that was desperate for cash swallowed a five inch nail and a saw blade for a $900 bet.
The man, named as Xiao Gong, was working in Ningbo, east China, and had been worried about rent, reported People’s Daily Online.
However, while Gong won his bet, he was admitted to hospital for lacerations in his stomach and almost lost his life.
Xiao Gong, 27, has been in Ningbo for some months looking for jobs.
He started a market stall when his job search turned up empty but unfortunately business was poor.
Gong swallowed a five inch nail for 2,000 Yuan (£200) and a five inch saw blade for 4,000 Yuan (£400).
Although there was initially some pain, it seemed to subside for a while.
At the hospital, doctors took an X-ray of Gong’s stomach and were shocked by its contents.
The nail and the saw were both wedged in different parts of his stomach.
Doctors were able to remove the nail after a two hour surgery.
However, the damage to his stomach lining means that Gong had started developing an infection and required further treatment.
As a result, Gong will be expected to fork out more than 10,000 Yuan (£1,000).
