ATLANTA – A passenger was arrested and charged with assaulting a U.S Customs and Border Protection officer at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

CBP arrested Jemel Broussard Harris, 38, a U.S. citizen from Newnan, Ga., for assault on a federal officer. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia is prosecuting Harris.

Harris arrived from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, just after 6 p.m. on November 15. Harris became verbally abusive toward CBP officers during a routine secondary examination, and then threw an item from his baggage and nearly struck an officer.

When a CBP officer approached, Harris assaulted the officer by striking him in the head with his fists. Several CBP officers quickly responded and placed him under arrest.

“This assault illustrates the inherent danger that law enforcement officers face every day while helping to keep our communities safe,” said Stephen Kremer, CBP Port Director for the Port of Atlanta. “The safety and security of our officers and the traveling public remains of paramount concern for Customs and Border Protection.”
