A man has been arrested and charged with capital murder in the death deaths of two nuns from Mississippi.

Rodney Earl Sanders, aged 46, was charged in the deaths of Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill, both aged 68.

The bodies of both women were discovered on Thursday after they failed to show up for work at a clinic in Lexington.

‘Sanders was developed as a person of interest early on in the investigation,’ Lt. Colonel Jimmy Jordan said in the statement.

‘With the cooperation of the Durant and Kosciusko Police Departments, Holmes County Sheriff’s Department and the Attorney General Office this heinous crime has been resolved.’

Officials confirmed Sanders was being held in an undisclosed detention center pending his court appearance.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive, or said how the women were killed.

But the Rev Greg Plata, of St Thomas Catholic Church in Lexington, said police had told him they were stabbed.

Joe Morgan, who was a diabetes patient of Sister Merrill, said he cannot forgive the perpetrator.

“She doesn’t deserve to die like this, doing God’s work,” Mr Morgan said.
